Banquet: Theme for the 27th Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence Academic Awards Banquet was “Champions for Education” and the event, attended by 1,000 people, featured 100 of the state's top public high school seniors and five outstanding Oklahoma educators. The event was at the Cox Convention Center.

Experts speak: New York Times columnist and author Thomas L. Friedman was keynote speaker. University of Oklahoma president David L. Boren, founder and chairman of the OFE, was master of ceremonies.

Chairmen: Morgan Harris was banquet chairman and Jamie Rhoades Antonisse was co-chairman.

Listening in: The foundation's 2013 Oklahoma Medal for Excellence Awards in Teaching went to Jill Edwards Steeley, John Waldron, Ruth Askew Brelsford, Richard Bunce and Cathy Burden. They received $5,000 cash awards and a glass sculpture. Academic All-State scholarships of $1,000 each and medallions were presented to 100 Academic All-State Scholars. The students come from 85 schools in 77 Oklahoma school districts.

Entertainment: Musical entertainment was by the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute Orchestra.


Past presidents' luncheon: 2011-12 Past President Whitney Tero was hostess to the Junior League's Past Presidents' Luncheon at Quail Creek Golf and Country Club. Nineteen past presidents attended.

The milestones: Whitney Tero welcomed the guests and 2012-13 President Cristi Reiger updated the group on JL activities. She discussed the 85th anniversary community gifts of $85,000 ($1,000 for each of the 85 years) to YWCA Economic Empowerment Program and Hand-in-Hand Learning Center and the Myriad Botanical Gardens for “Bringing Books to Life” in the Children's Garden. She discussed the closing of the Remarkable Shop and the sale of the RS building, the ongoing research of possible new fundraisers and she talked about the 10-year literacy focus. Next year health will become the new focus area for the JL. She also discussed the beginning of the Centennial Fund in preparation for the 100th Anniversary of the Junior League.
