What/when: People attending the 100 years of excellence in journalism education celebration at the University of Oklahoma Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication were guests at a luncheon Sept. 6. The Centennial Celebration was Sept. 6 and 7.

Where: The event was in the Sandy Bell Gallery at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art. Afterward there was a faculty panel discussion at Gaylord Hall on “The Future of Media.”

Why: There were also banquets, award ceremonies, cocktail receptions, an alumni tailgate party before the OU-West Virginia football game and other forums celebrating the program, which has 11,000 alumni. At the Thursday night dinner, former NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw was presented the Gaylord Prize for Excellence in Journalism and Mass Communications. On Friday, retired U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Gen. John Admire, Shane Boyd and Donna Shirley won the JayMac Alumni Association Distinguished Alumni Award. Dari Nowkhah of ESPNU was named the Young Professional of the Year.

Who: Special guests at the luncheon included OU President David L. Boren, Chris Purcell, Nancy Mergler, Catherine Bishop, Christy Everest, Tricia Everest, Bill Ross, Bob Ross. Alumni included Tripp Hall, Paul Massad; the three authors of a special edition coffee table book: Bob Burke, Andy Rieger and Bill Moore; co-chairmen of the Centennial Steering Committee, Jari Askins and Bart Conner. Other alumni who attended were Admire, Ed Kelley, Linda Cavanaugh, Kari Watkins, Gail Donovan, Melissa Bird, Lee Reynolds, Bill Hancock, Mary Ellen Hipp Doyle, Linda Johnson, Admire, Robert Hess, Paul Renfrow, Shane Boyd, Jim Dolan, Kim Bayliss, Cherokee Ballard, Marti Pate Gallardo, Gracie and John D. Montgomery.

Who else: Dean Joe Foote recognized the Livermore newspaper family, Ed Livermore Sr. (Class of 1940) and son Ed Livermore Jr. and daughters Sarah Livermore Spencer and Mary Livermore Bush. Kristen Lazalier, director of development, and also a 1987 graduate of the program, spearheaded the planning and oversaw the coordination of the three-day celebration.


Party: Libby Steakley was honored at a 65th birthday party given by her sister, Susan Sadler of Tulsa. It was at La Baguette.

Menu/flowers: The hostess served mimosas, mushroom chicken crepes and chocolate mousse birthday cake. Centerpieces were bouquets of orchids, white tulips and English garden roses.

Guests: There were 22 people at the party, including Oklahoma City friends and family members and some friends from Muskogee.


Celebration: To celebrate the first issue of the First American Art Magazine, Carl Milam, on behalf of Editor America Meredith, hosted a launch party at The Lobby Bar for native artists, writers, scholars and guests. The magazine showcases art from various Native American perspectives. Copies of the first issue and limited run pilot issues were available.
