Special decorations: The grandchildren, David, Cate and Lizzie Carter, created a 16-foot banner for the table, which read “Happy Birthday Poppy.” A huge bouquet of orchids and bird of paradise flowers decorated the food table and individual tables had centerpieces of green and white hydrangeas with green berries.

Menu: There were mini-hot dogs, hamburger and cheeseburger sliders, shrimp in shot glasses, and mini strawberry, chocolate and vanilla cupcakes, along with dessert bars, brownies and cookies.

Seen: Barbara Watson, Barbara Mee, Beth and Chuck Morrison, Patty and Roland Tague, Judy and Bill Phillips, Patti and Dick Marshall, Janie and Bill Deupree. Jamie and Gil Gaddis, Bette Jo and Frank Hill, Ruthie and O.B. Johnston, Sally and Gary Davis, Cheryl and Gene Melton, Susan and Mike McPherson, Karen and Earl Ingram, Mary and Rowland Denman, Mary Anne Malone, Charlie Lutz, Sue and Tom Nix and daughter-in-law and son Lori and Chip Carter with David, Cate and Lizzie Carter were among the people at the party.

Partying on: Bev and David Carter left the next day for a visit to Shreveport, La., to see their other son and family, Chris Carter, Susan Campbell and their children, Isabel and Colin Carter.

Annual banquet: Chris Purcell, vice president for the University of Oklahoma Governance Board of Regents and executive secretary, was the recipient of the 2014 Women's Leadership Award from the Norman Chamber of Commerce. She was recognized at a banquet in the Embassy Suites Hotel & Convention Center in Norman.

Award criteria: The award is for female leaders who excel in their chosen field, devote time and energy to Norman in a meaningful way and actively inspire other women to achieve their full potential.

Past recipients: The honor, previously known as the Athena Award, has been given in the past to Molly Shi Boren, Nancy O'Brian, Cindy Merrick, Sherri Coale and Jaci Williams.

Other news: Chris was also recognized at the Norman Campus Staff Senate Awards Ceremony for 40 years of service to OU. On the stage were President David L. Boren, Board of Regents Chairman Tom Clark, Tulsa, and Regent Max Weitzenhoffer, Norman. This ceremony also included recognition of OU staff retirees, staff anniversaries and an awards presentation.
