Chefs Jonathon Stranger and Russ Johnson need your help developing the menu for their newest concept, and your opportunity to lend that help begins tonight at the first H&8th of 2014.

Stranger and Johnson will open a new bar, hopefully by the end of September in Midtown, focused on perfect cocktails and a food menu inspired by the American supper club of the 1950-60s era.

“We want to do the classics our way,” Stranger said.

The new currently unnamed concept will be on the 300 block of NW 10 Street in the back portion of the building where Archer Printing resided before its recent merger, just east of Walker Avenue.

Oklahoma City’s culinary roots took hold in that very cuisine during the middle of the 20th Century through a dozen or more cafeterias that made the 405 the country’s cafeteria capital in the “Mad Men” era and beyond.

If you’ve got ideas for the name, Stranger and Johnson aren’t afraid to listen. But at tonight’s H&8th Night Market the chefs’ current restaurant, Ludivine 805 N Hudson, will feature menu items from the new concept.

“We need feedback,” Stranger said. “And H&8th gives us a chance to play with these new ideas and hear from people.”

Meanwhile, H&8th is coming off a season in which it took a quantum leap in popularity, routinely drawing more than 5,000 folks and reaching as high as 8,500. At tonight’s street party
Food trucks confirmed: 2 Brothers Bistro, Adolini’s Pizzeria, Big Truck Tacos, Back Door Barbecue, Cafe Bella on Wheels, Chick N Wings, Crepe Brewers, El Reno Original Fried Onion Burgers, Frank’s Wurst, Green & Grilled, The Hall’s Pizza Kitchen, Huey’s Shave Ice, Jerky.com, Kaiteki Ramen, Kosmos BBQ, La Gumbo Ya Ya, Lalo’s I Love My Taco Chop & Grill, The Loaded Bowl, Mexiasian Fusion, MotoChef, Off The Hook Seafood & More, Pagoda Pizza, Pie on the Fly, Roxy’s Ice Cream Social, The Saucee Sicilian, Smokin’ Okies, Tacos El Patron, Taste of Soul Chicken and Waffle, and Taste of Soul Eggroll.

And then there’s the STASH Block party up the street that will congruently operate tonight, which should help better distribute the crowd.

Needless to say, these are delicious times to be living in Oklahoma City. Don’t believe me? Colleague Steve Lackmeyer published a story this morning with updated information about some concepts I’ve reported on scheduled to open in Uptown, which is doing its due best to keep up with developments in Midtown as well as the Plaza District. Read about the building where The Drake, Gusto and The Pump here.

Finally, tomorrow night (March 29) I’ll be competing in a Guac-Off versus chef Josh Valentine and local wine expert and The Spy FM host Clayton Bahr at Ludivine. We will be tasked with making guacamole and a fresh tortilla in 30 minutes. The competition begins at 10 p.m. in the dining room, feel free to drop by and heckle my competition.
