We’re awaiting a new arrival in the coming weeks.
There will be two new voices on our team, and they will be working for you.
We need to name them, and we want you to help.
The Oklahoman is preparing to launch a mobile application that would allow you to listen to stories from our newsroom while you commute to and from work. The app will work on iPhones and Android devices.
We think the application will be a great step for us to enter your vehicle with an easy-to-use, hands-free news experience that will continue to tune the news delivery based on your interests and usage habits. You will tell it what kinds of stories you want, and it will learn more about you the more you use the app.
It will be a great step for our subscribers, as well, since they will have access to this new technology as part of their subscription.
Sounds great, I know. But wait! Don’t go rushing to the store. The app isn’t there yet. We’re still putting the final touches on it and refining the product for you.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t begin eagerly anticipating the app’s release. While you anticipate, you can help us name the voices that will read these stories to you.
These narrators are computer-generated voices, but they sound pretty real – which is why we must name them. Don’t worry. We think that giving them a name is still a couple of steps away from these voices becoming self-aware. We’re safe.
What names do you want to greet you each morning?
So we’ll take a vote. We’ll let you help us decide. After all, these voices are going to speak to you as you start your car in the morning. I’ve been testing the app and hearing them each morning. They’re cool. They even know my name.
“Good morning, Alan. I am Mork. And I am Mindy. … “
Those aren’t the names, but that’s a pretty good idea, right?
Unfortunately, the user won’t get to personally name the narrators for their own experience. The same names will be there for everyone.
So choose wisely. Cast your votes.
