The 2013 master teacher award from the publisher Elsevier has been awarded to Oklahoma City teacher Tambre Ross of Heritage College.

Ross teaches X-ray medical technician and medical assistant courses at the school at 7100 I-35 Service Road.

Elsevier, a health science publisher, teamed with the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools to present the award, which recognizes teaching in the allied health disciplines. Ross received a plaque, $500 cash and expenses paid to receive the award in San Diego.

“I was extremely honored to represent my school,” Ross said. “Receiving the award was an emotional tug on my heart, filling me with such pride for what we do as a team.”

Ross instills professionalism in her students by treating the classroom like a work environment. To illustrate the importance of being on time, she has students clock in and out of class with a timecard. She created an imaginary pay scale with raises and promotions based on students' hours in class, completion of assignments and test scores.

Ross developed lesson plans that use “experiments” to help students understand difficult concepts. Instead of just lecturing about the digestive system and looking at body system charts, she illustrates the lesson with common household items.

In one experiment, she mixes ground pork and berries into a mush to simulate bolus turned to chyme. The stomach is represented by a glass jar and the gastric juices are vinegar mixed with Alka-Seltzer. Ross then asks the students to feel the mixture so they get an idea of the texture and can see the effect acid has on food particles.
