Thanks to science teacher Ryan Heber, the school shooting at California’s Taft Union High School yesterday was defused after a 16-year-old gunman allegedly shot a fellow student.

“I don’t want to shoot you,” the student told Heber according to Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood.

Heber, already wounded in the head by a shotgun pellet, was trying to convince the teen to give up his shotgun according to the Associated Press.

Youngblood suggested that Heber’s confrontation with the shooter gave the 28 students enough time to escape their classroom.

The shooting suspect reportedly surrendered his weapon to Heber, although his pockets were filled with ammunition.

“If it weren’t for this teacher and his quick response, we don’t know what would have happened,” Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood said, according to the L.A. Times.
