EDMOND — Deer Creek senior Caleb Eldridge’s bat was stuck on his shoulder.

Guthrie pitcher Blaze Hastings had just unleashed a fastball down the middle of the plate in a crucial district game recently, and Eldridge watched astonished.

It was a risky pitch.

But it was also one of the few fastballs the left-handed first baseman who has signed with Oklahoma State has seen at the plate lately, and it left him nearly motionless.

“It was right down the middle of the plate,” Eldridge said with a hint of disappointment in his voice.

Eldridge has been on an impressive tear as of late, hitting nine home runs his last 14 games to lead the Antlers into the Class 5A state baseball tournament this weekend.

The Antlers open at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Norman North against Durant, and they’re looking to ride the hot bat of Eldridge.

“Really, I just decided to quit trying to hit bombs and focus on hitting the ball hard,” Eldridge said. “When you don’t try, it comes. When you try, it don’t come.”

The Antlers (24-13) have won five of their last eight games, including all three games in their regional tournament. That’s where the offense started clicking, scoring no less than 13 runs in each game.

Eldridge hit three homers and drove in eight runs.

“He’s one of those guys, when he’s hitting the ball well all of our guys are hitting it well,” Deer Creek coach Ron Moore said. “I just think as he continues to get on base, as he continues to hit, everybody else around him gets more excited to hit as well. It only takes hit to get our guys excited.”
