High school basketball: Defense sparks Southeast boys

With its defensive pressure forcing turnover after turnover, Southeast was able to hold off Northeast for a 72-59 boys basketball victory Tuesday night.

Rashawn Thomas had 22 points for Southeast and was a force in the paint, both rebounding and blocking shots. Romello Roberson added 19 and Ricardo Deluna had 10 for the Spartans, who improved to 5-3 on the season.

Northeast was able to keep itself in the game early with 3-pointers at key moments. Tyus Johnson hit three of his four 3s in the first half on his way to 26 points, while Rodney Overton added 17 for the Vikings.

But Southeast pulled away with a 17-4 run to open the second half, and was strong at the free-throw line down the stretch to ice it. The Spartans were 17-of-22 at the line in the second half.

The Northeast girls coasted to an 81-13 win over Southeast.

Stephen Clark scored 16, and Glenn Banks had 10 for Douglass, ranked No. 1 in Class 4A. Ashford Golden led Millwood, No. 2 in Class 3A, with 19 points.
