High school basketball: Okarche girls reach Class B state tournament

There was little doubt Okarche would return to the girls basketball state tournament this season.

The question was when the top-ranked Warriors would enter the eight-team field next week.

They answered that in resounding fashion Friday night, routing No. 8 Buffalo Valley 76-20 in a Class B area championship game in Ada.

“The ball went in the hole,” Okarche coach Cherie Myers said. “When the ball goes in the hole, it looks good. Our press gave them trouble. I thought we did a real good job of following the scouting report and stopping the things we’ve seen in the past.”

Okarche (26-2) won the Class A championship last season before dropping a class before this season. All five starters returned, too, earning them the status of heavy favorite.

The Warriors certainly lived up to that in the playoffs, outscoring their opponents by almost 60 points per game during their four games.

Myers, however, didn’t see this kind of dominance coming to start the year.

“I know the main names and the ones that have had the tradition over the years, but I didn’t feel like I knew the Class B schools as well,” she said. “But I really didn’t know the east schools as much, so I had to rely on some guys going out to scout for me and some other scouting reports.”

Okarche led Buffalo Valley 46-9 at halftime.

Morgan Vogt led the way with 19 points, while Madi Grellner added 18 and Kenadey Grellner scored 10.
