High school basketball: Putnam City boys rally to earn state tournament berth

For the second straight night, Putnam City needed a second-half comeback to keep its season alive, and once again, the third-ranked Pirates came through.

On Friday, the Pirates defeated Edmond North in overtime, and on Saturday, PC exploded in the final minutes to pull away for a 67-59 win over Edmond Santa Fe at Norman North.

Defense turned the key for PC Saturday, with tough perimeter defense creating turnovers, and forward Orlando Goldsmith blocking shots around the rim to lead to easy points for the Pirates.

“We just thought about the seven seniors and how this would be our last time playing together,” said David Bush, who led PC with 22 points. “We started going down and playing better defense, getting offensive boards, and just playing hard together.”

Richmarr Smith had 16 points, and Ronnie Boyce had 13 for the Pirates, who will be making their sixth straight appearance in the state tournament.

Kade Jacobs scored 15 points on five 3-pointers to lead the Wolves.

DOUGLASS SURVIVES

Douglass point guard Stephen Clark scored his team's last seven points, including a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 15 seconds to play, as the Trojans sealed up a state berth with a 74-70 win over No. 8 Tulsa McLain in a back-and-forth contest.
