Caleb Corprew only scored two points Friday night, but it might have been the most important basket top-ranked Midwest City got in a 73-54 win over Edmond Santa Fe that sealed a Class 6A state tournament bid for the Bombers Friday night at Choctaw.
Midway through the second quarter, Corprew slammed in a putback of a missed layup that brought a roar from the Bombers' student section and brought a shot of emotion to the team.
“It's amazing in high school how dunks motivate everybody,” coach Dewayne Bradley said. “That was an impressive dunk that really gave us a lot of energy. That really got us going.
“He is, without a doubt, our most improved player from last year to this year.”
After Corprew's slam, the Bombers began widening the gap, ultimately pulling away for an easy win.
Torey Noel had a game-high 18 points for Midwest City, while Daryck Jones added 14 among five Bomber scorers in double figures.
Curran Scott led Edmond Santa Fe with 14 points. The Wolves will face Putnam City at 8 p.m. Saturday night at Norman North for a berth in the state tournament.
PC survives in OT
Ronnie Boyce scored 12 of his game-high 26 points in the fourth quarter and overtime to help Putnam City avoid elimination with a 68-61 win over Edmond North.
The Pirates trailed much of the first half, but opened the third quarter with an 11-2 run, and the game remained tight the rest of the way.
Boyce had two of his three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. He and Richmarr Smith had four points apiece in overtime as PC overcame a 24-point outing from Edmond North's Carlbe Ervin.
Edmond Memorial advances
Second-ranked Edmond Memorial held off a feisty Putnam City West squad for a 62-56 win for a berth in the state tournament. The Bulldogs won state in 2011 and lost in the title game last year.
PC West will face Lawton Eisenhower for a spot in the state tournament at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Norman North.
Del City still alive
Del City has fought back from the loss of its top player, Brett Cannon, to a broken arm last month, and now is one win away from the state tournament after a 48-34 win over Capitol Hill.
