High school basketball: Shawnee girls beat Bishop McGuinness

The Wolves did pound the ball inside and took advantage, beating the Irish 54-34 at home.

Shawnee was 24 of 30 from the free-throw line.

“We played them the first time and they really got after it, so we had an idea of what they were going to try to do,” Shawnee coach Wendi Wells said.

Junior McKenzie Cooper led the Wolves (13-1) with 24 points, making 12 of 14 free throws.

“She did a great job tonight flashing to the ball,” Wells said. “She was prepared for what they were going to do.”

Cooper had nine points in the first quarter as Shawnee jumped ahead 18-6. She also scored 12 of the Wolves' 17 third-quarter points.

The win was Shawnee's ninth in a row.

Wells is still looking for consistency out of her young team.

“They're continuing to mature,” Wells said. “With the youth on this team, they'll have a little success and get a little excited and that's when they start making mistakes. We've got to keep working on that.”

SANTA FE OVERCOMES SLOW START

On the road for three days at the Skiatook Tournament last weekend, No. 1 Edmond Santa Fe's offense needed some time to get back in rhythm Tuesday night.

But the defense was sharp from the start.

Santa Fe kept Mustang in check with tough defense until the Wolves' offense caught fire in the third quarter on its way to a 52-29 road win.

Tamara Lee had a game-high 14 points for Edmond Santa Fe, which improved to 13-1 on the season. Aahliyah Jackson and Cameerah Graves had nine points each for the Wolves.

“When you play a tournament, then turn right around and play on Tuesday, it takes a little while to get their cells energized,” Santa Fe coach Paul Bass said. “We didn't come out real strong, but we did have our defense. We just couldn't get the offense going, really, until the third quarter.

“Our defense is what keeps us in these games when we're not gelling really well on offense yet. The defense is there every night.”

CARTER GETS 1,000

Carl Albert's Gioya Carter scored 23 points in the Titans' 51-42 home win against El Reno on Tuesday night.

The total was enough to put Carter, an OU signee, over the 1,000 career points mark.
