High school football: 6A-4 among state's toughest districts; Mustang the biggest surprise
WHAT TO WATCH FOR — With Southmoore, Mustang and Norman looking good in addition to Edmond Santa Fe and Lawton, District 6A-4 is looking especially formidable this season.
EDITOR'S NOTE: Due to an incorrect score listed in Saturday's editions of The Oklahoman, Ringling was listed below as one of the state's biggest disappointments in high school football. That portion on Ringling has been removed from this article.

For most districts across the state, district play opens up this week as most nondistrict schedules came to an end last week. Here's what to watch as we head into the meat of the high school football season:
1. District 6A-4
Most everyone expected Edmond Santa Fe and Lawton to be the class of the district, but past that, it looked like there was a sizable gap. But Southmoore and Mustang have both bounced back from disappointing seasons a year ago to start 3-0, and Norman, which figured to be down after losing a strong class, is at 2-1 entering district play.
2. District 5A-2
Guthrie is the defending champion and have played like it, outscoring opponents 128-33 through three games. McGuinness has surprised in its first year in 5A, winning its three games by at least 19 points. Deer Creek has scored 42 or more points each week, and Carl Albert showed last week in a win against Duncan that it is making strides after replacing all of its skill-position players.
3. District 3A-5
Another district with four teams ranked in the top 10, headed by No. 3 Berryhill. Sequoyah-Claremore, Metro Christian and Verdigris are also among the ranked teams in this seven-team district. Those four plus Dewey are a combined 12-3.
The Broncos entered the season with plenty of unknowns after last year's 2-8 mark. Mustang has already topped that with three wins, outscoring its opponents 91-42 in the process. Mustang has been known for explosive offenses during Ty Prestidge's time as head coach, and that appears to be back early in the season.
