High school football: Bethany eyeing return to elite in 3A

Since finishing as the Class 3A runner-up in 2010, Bethany hasn’t made a run past the second round of the playoffs.

With several players returning led by a solid senior class, the Bronchos are expecting to potentially become a state championship contender once again this season.

“We’ve got a lot of our kids back, particularly at the skill positions, so we’re pretty excited,” said Bethany coach Reagan Roof. “We think we’ve got a chance to a pretty good team in 3A again. With 3A being as tough as it is, I don’t know exactly what that means in terms of wins and losses, but we’ve got a chance to be better than we’ve been the last couple of years for sure.”

Senior Kyle Duke returns to start for a third straight year at quarterback. Duke will have one of his top targets back from a season ago in senior receiver Cody Seeds, and 6-foot-3, 300-pound senior Sam Jones will lead the offensive line.

Bethany went 7-4 last season, falling in the first round of the playoffs to Tuttle.

“We thought we had a pretty good year last year,” Roof said. “We got beat by Seminole, Blanchard, Tuttle, and Beggs. That was some pretty good competition a year ago.”
