BLANCHARD — Blanchard coach Jeff Craig watched his football team win just five games last season. The Lions equaled that number Friday night with 53-8 thumping of Bridge Creek.
Blanchard’s win at Lions Field marks the best start to a season in Craig’s six years as head coach. The Lions are 5-0 overall and 2-0 in District 3A-1.
“We made it a goal of ours to really come in and be more dedicated to the season,” Craig said. “We wanted to stay hungry, and our guys are doing a great job of that right now.”
Blanchard grabbed control of the game early — and did not let go. The Lions racked up more than 250 yards of offense and scored 47 points on Bridge Creek in the first half alone.
Lions quarterback Brock Lamle completed 6 of 9 passes for 136 yards with three touchdowns.
“We try to be as efficient as we can,” Lamle said.
Bridge Creek (2-2, 1-1) was held to just 49 total yards and spent much of the game inside its own 50-yard line. Senior running back Morgan Merrell scored the Bobcats’ only touchdown.
The Blanchard defense shut out Bridge Creek in the first half. It forced — and recovered — five Bobcat fumbles, including three in the first quarter.
“That was probably one of our better nights in terms of turnovers,” Craig said.
Blanchard running back Stephan Davis rushed for 78 yards on four carries with a touchdown. Wide receiver Zach Hill finished with 106 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns.
“Going into this week, we thought (Bridge Creek) was going to be our best team that we had to play,” Hill said. “To put them away like that was pretty good.”
