Southmoore’s Conner Uselton emerged last season as one of Class 6A’s top young quarterbacks while starting as a freshman.
This preseason, the sophomore is fighting for his job as impressive freshman Casey Thompson enters the mix at the position.
“Both of them bring great things to the table,” said Southmoore coach Jeremy Stark. “Both of them are super athletic, smart kids, hard workers. Conner has the experience, but Casey is a great athlete who is working his tail off. It’s really neck and neck. We’ll put the best guy out there for our team, and both these guys can play probably a half dozen other positions depending on what happens.”
Casey is the younger brother of former Southmoore and OU quarterback Kendal Thompson, who is now at Utah.
Uselton completed 55 percent of his passes while throwing for 709 yards last season. He saw action in nine games, missing one due to a concussion.
Stark says the coaching staff would like to name a starter during preseason practice, but didn’t rule out the possibility of playing both during the season until the starting spot is earned.
“It’s a great situation to have with two guys that can really play,” Stark said. “Also, both have different strengths of their own and that can put opposing teams in a situation where they have to prepare for two different styles.”
