High school football: Edmond Memorial continues late-season surge, stuns No. 9 Southmoore
Sophomore running back Warren Wand collects 212 yards and two touchdowns in Bulldogs' comeback victory.
EDMOND — When the final whistle blew Friday night, Edmond Memorial football coach Justin Merideth threw his hands in the air and gave the nearest player into a bear hug.
Edmond Memorial had just knocked off Class 6A's No. 9-ranked Southmoore 27-20 at Wantland Stadium.
Merideth beckoned his team into a close huddle at the numbers at the 40-yard line and told them how proud he was of their performance. The Bulldogs (3-5 overall, 3-2 in district 6A-4) overcame a 12-6 halftime deficit.
“Getting a W like that after starting 0-5 against a really good team, it means a lot,” Merideth said.
After the postgame team huddle broke, sophomore running back Warren Wand was rushed by well-wishers. He'd rushed for 212 yards on 23 carries with two touchdowns.
“He just makes plays when we need him, and we're lucky to have him,” Merideth said.
Wand sprinted 72 yards late in the fourth quarter for his only rushing touchdown of the game. After that score, the Bulldogs trailed Southmoore 20-19.
