EDMOND — Edmond North's vaunted defense had its heads spinning in the first half Friday night against Putnam City North.

The Panthers opened the game with some trickery, completing an 80-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the game. Halfback Tae Moore caught a lateral pass from quarterback John Simon and found a wide open Kaedyn Fuller for the score.

Putnam North ran the same play later in the first half, only it was Fuller catching the touchdown pass from wide receiver Alex Clark.

The Panthers jumped to a two-touchdown lead, but Edmond North recovered and scored 38 unanswered points on its way to a 52-28 victory at Wantland Stadium.

“We were very shocked,” said Edmond North defensive back Luke Rossi, who later in the game outwrestled a Putnam North defender for a critical 26-touchdown catch that cut the Huskies' deficit in half.

“We had not prepared for that. We had prepared for a lot of bubbles and then when they did that and threw deep, it surprised us.”

Linebacker Brock Byford admitted the Huskies were worried when they fell behind 21-7 and then later 28-14.

“It was a lot of trickery,” Byford said. “We never saw that on film. We weren't ready for that. Kind of scared, the first half, but we turned it on the second half. We just had to calm down and play our game.”

The Panthers (2-2 overall, 0-1 district) rolled up 280 yards of offense in the first half, but 256 came on four plays. In addition to the two trick plays that produced touchdowns, Larry Butler scored on a 66-yard run and Moore took a short toss from Simon and took it 80 yards to the end zone.

“We told the kids all week this was going to be a tougher ballgame than what a lot of people on the outside thought,” Edmond North Jeremy Dombek said.
