— Fresh off his squad's 36-14 walloping of No. 9 Stillwater, Ty Prestidge gave it up to Mustang's 12th man.

But Prestidge wasn't buttering up his home crowd with a football cliché; the coach was praising Frankie Edwards, his junior quarterback who was so good Friday that it literally seemed sometimes like there had to be two of him.

“When any team through the years runs the spread and has a quarterback who can run, it's almost like playing with 12 people,” Prestidge said. “He's like a ghost quarterback; he becomes another back.”

Edwards completed 21 of 31 passes for 203 yards and three touchdowns, and added 18 carries for 152 yards on the ground as the Broncos improved to 3-0 with a rout of the previously unbeaten Pioneers.

Last year as a sophomore, Edwards was forced into action — and even started Mustang's final three games — because of injuries to senior starter Brandon Taylor. The Broncos finished a disappointing 3-7 and missed the postseason, a rarity for Prestidge's Mustang teams.

“Through the offseason last year and the summer, I've gotten a lot more comfortable,” Edwards said. “It's not me; it's my team. Especially my line and my receivers; they do everything for me.”

His receivers and line did help Friday, but Edwards' legs kept some passing plays alive and created big moments, like when he busted off second-quarter runs of 31 and 58 yards.
