In the closing seconds of Lawton's game at Edmond North last October, North was threatening, with the ball at the 5 and down 12-0.

Then Maurice Chandler turned what could have been a tight game into a relatively comfortable halftime lead with a 94-yard interception return for a touchdown as time expired in the half.

The play wound up being a big one as Edmond North came back in the second half, but Lawton held on for an 18-15 win.

“Without a doubt, that's the play that I remember most from him,” Wolverines coach Randy Breeze said. “That turned the game around for us.”

Now, Chandler is one of the highest-touted recruits in the state, coming in at No. 7 on The Oklahoman's Super 30 list.

He has offers from a handful of schools that include Arizona State, Arkansas State, Kansas State, Oregon State and Texas Tech.

He'll visit Texas Tech later in the week.

About the only thing holding Chandler back from even bigger offers is his classroom work.

“He's still a work in progress in that area,” Breeze said.

Breeze has coached plenty of top-flight defensive backs during his career, and two stand out in comparison to Chandler.

Both played big-time Division I football and spent time in the NFL.

“I'd say Antonio Perkins and James Trapp,” Breeze said. “Antonio didn't play much defense for us but did at OU. He's one of those gliders like Antonio, but he's a bit bigger.
