High school football: Mustang quarterback Frankie Edwards accounts for four TDs in victory over Yukon
The junior had three other touchdown passes negated by penalty in the first half
YUKON — Powered by the arm, legs and foot of quarterback Frankie Edwards, Mustang jumped to an 18-point third quarter lead then held off arch rival Yukon 38-28 in a Class 6A football season opener Friday night.
Edwards, a junior who started the last three games in 2011 and established himself as a running and passing threat, threw for 273 yards and two touchdowns, rushed for 48 yards and two touchdowns, and pinned two pooch punts (43 and 39 yards) inside the Yukon 5-yard line. He also had three other touchdown passes negated by penalty in the first half.
“He was a 63 percent passer for us last year,” Broncos' coach Ty Prestige said. “He did a good job of spreading the ball around and moving the chains tonight.”
Yukon's offense was led by A.J. West, who rushed for 191 yards on 19 carries, including an 87-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
Edwards' 6-yard touchdown run early in the second half put Mustang ahead 24-6. But a 27-yard touchdown pass and 1-yard touchdown run by Millers' quarterback Hayden Somerville in the next two Yukon possessions narrowed Mustang's lead to 24-20.
The Millers' comeback effort was thwarted by three subsequent turnovers. After Mustang was held to a three-and-out on its next possession, a muffed punt return gave the Broncos the ball back on the Yukon 44. A pass interference penalty, defensive holding penalty and 13-yard run by Edwards set up the next touchdown, a 3-yard run by Cale Harper.
