High school football: Mustang runs over Putnam City North

Broncos totals 398 rushing yards during 41-28 victory over Panthers

WARR ACRES — Heavy rain and a passing offense don't mix well, so Mustang had to step out of character Thursday night at Putnam City Stadium.

Turns out, the Broncos can run the ball, too.

Mustang (1-1) rushed for 398 yards on 51 carries on its way to a 41-28 victory over Putnam City North (0-2).

After the usually high-powered Bronco offense posted only 16 points in its season-opening loss to Yukon last Friday, this week felt more comfortable.

“We felt more confident tonight,” said senior running back Cutter Smith, who had 133 yards and a touchdown on 21 rushes. “It feels like we can run or pass if we need to. Our offensive line just blocked incredible. They opened holes and we just had to get to them.”

Quarterback Frankie Edwards rushed for 178 yards and two touchdowns on 15 attempts, while throwing for another 184 yards. The passing game was picking up big yardage — 73 yards on his first five completions — until the heavy rainstorm hit. At that point, the offense turned to the ground game.

“That ball was heavy,” Edwards said, shaking his head. “It felt like I was shot-putting.
