Still celebrating his team's 49-42 win over Owasso on Friday night in the Class 6A semifinals at Union-Tuttle Stadium, Norman North linebacker Jordan Evans briefly thought ahead.

“I heard they're good,” Evans said of the Timberwolves' next opponent, Jenks, with a shrug. “We've got to play as good as we can to come out with a win.

“Our job is not done, though.”

Evans' casual respect for the Trojans, though, hides a very real respect for what Jenks has accomplished.

In the last 16 years, Jenks has won nine state championships. Tulsa Union has won the other seven as no West-side team has taken a title in the state's largest class since Midwest City in 1995.

Now, in addition to their own goals, the Timberwolves also carry the burden of playing for the entire side of the state.

Norman North coach Wade Standley knows plenty about what has built the Jenks-Union streak.

Standley was a longtime assistant under Bill Blankenship and Kirk Fridrich at Union.
