High school football: Putnam City North returning to playoffs; Putnam City still in the running

There's been a lot of good football played in the Putnam City School District over the last several years, but the playoffs have escaped them recently.


You have to go back to 2008 to find a season when both Putnam City and Putnam City North reached the postseason, and no school from the district has made it the last two seasons.

But one or both of those streaks is set to end this year.

Putnam City North clinched a playoff berth with a win Friday, and Putnam City is still in the running for the third or fourth spots in District 6A-2 — though the Pirates need a little help.

PC takes on Jenks this week, and could sneak into third place in the district with a loss, combined with losses by Westmoore and Sapulpa. It's also possible that those three teams could end up in a three-way tie with the final two spots determined by district points.

But quarterback Devin White says the Pirates can't worry about all of that stuff.

“We can't focus on anybody else,” White said. “We have to go play our game, and maybe we can get the ‘W.' We think we've got a chance to get in, but it will probably come down to points.”
