High school notebook: Coyle's Magnus Scott signs with Kansas State
Scott decides to run track for Wildcats, turns down football offers from NCAA Division II schools
A long, winding recruiting process finally came to an end for Coyle sprinter Magnus Scott, who has signed with Kansas State.
Scott, who specializes in the 100 and 200 meters, was recruited by a variety of programs over the last few months, including Arkansas, Oklahoma State, Syracuse and Arizona State.
He also received interest as a football player, with multiple NCAA Division II offers.
Scott's sprint times were among the best in the state all season, running a 10.41 in the 100 and 21.65 in the 200.
At the Class A state meet, Scott won both events and ran on the 400 relay team that finished second.
WILLIS HAPPY TO BE BACK IN OKC
Don Willis is happy to be home after spending the last eight years in Texas.
As the new football coach at Centennial, Willis is back close to family and ready to help get the struggling, young program on its feet.
Willis spent 22 years at Millwood, including nine as the head coach, compiling a 91-27 record overall. He won at least seven games in each of his nine seasons.
He was drawn to the opportunity to be back in Oklahoma City and help care for his aging mother.
“I wanted to come back and help take care of her,” he said. “That was one thing, and the other — when you pray about a situation, and the good Lord tells you this is where you need to be, you've got to make that move.”
Centennial has struggled to build its football program since 2007, when the Oklahoma City school opened. But success in other sports, including back-to-back state titles in boys basketball, led Willis to believe the school can succeed in football, too.
“When I first got the job, people kept telling me, ‘Coach, you've got a lot of talent there. You've just to get them out of the halls,'” Willis said. “The kids who are out are buying in and doing a good job, but we don't have the numbers yet.”
