State's top coaches named by NFHS
The National Federation of State High School Associations recently released the names of the state and sectional coaches of the year by sport from Oklahoma.
In mid-January, Edmond North boys golf coach Jeff Dougherty and Heritage Hall tennis coach Dick Villaflor were selected as national coaches of the year for their sports.
The state also had four sectional coach of the year choices in Douglass boys basketball coach Terry Long, Guthrie boys cross country coach Clay Tarter, Edmond Memorial girls cross country coach Sunny Baldridge and Tulsa Kelley girls soccer coach Troy Tokarchik.
The state coach of the year winners were: Trey Booth of Red Oak for baseball, Joe Sindelar of Woodland for football, Jerry Walker of Fort Gibson for girls basketball, Alex Miranda of Broken Arrow for boys soccer, Matt Surber of Tuttle for wrestling, Mike Lawless of Colbert for softball, Jerry Naylor of Plainview for girls cross country, Guy Worth of Harrah for boys swimming, Connie Dean of Fort Gibson for girls swimming, Stephanie Dilks of Cache for volleyball and Dee Wallar of Edmond North for boys tennis.
EDMOND NORTH'S ROBERTSON PART OF FOUR RECORDS
Edmond North swimmers set four Metro Conference records at the Midstate and Metro Conference Championships on Friday and Saturday at Oklahoma City Community College.
Freshman Ally Robertson set records in the 200 individual medley (2:08.61) and the 100 backstroke (1:00.53).
She also teamed up with Megan Snelling, Ann-Marie Stow and Abbie Imes to set records in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. The group won the 200 in 1:42.76 and the 400 in 3:48.48.
Edmond North swept the Metro Conference meet, with Putnam City North second and Mustang third on both the boys and girls sides.
In the Midstate meet, Norman North's boys beat Norman 502.5-398 to take the title. Edmond Memorial's girls beat second-place Norman North 516-448.
DOUGLASS' MCKINNEY AMONG FRESHMEN HONORED
Douglass freshman defensive back Aaron McKinney was among three Oklahoma players named to the U.S. Air Force All-America team by MaxPreps.com
The list included about 100 players from across the nation.
Joining McKinney on the list were Roland tight end Austin Cantrell and Tulsa Union running back Terrell Buchannan.
