Kai Callins' big night in Guthrie's 43-0 win over Duncan Friday night was followed by bad news Saturday.
Callins said he felt a pop in his knee trying to make jab step on a run, and learned Saturday that he tore his ACL and will be out for the season.
“That's the first thing that went through my mind, but I was able to get up and walk off the field,” said Callins, one of the state's top players in the junior class. “It was hard to put pressure on it so they took me out early and had me sit out the rest of the game.”
Callins moved to running back this year after starting as a sophomore receiver on last season's Bluejays' 5A state championship team.
Against Duncan, Callins only had four carries but scored twice, on runs of 61 and 43 yards. He also caught a 15-touchdown pass. His role this season was expected to be significant for Guthrie as a running back, receiver and defensive back.
Putnam City North starts strong
Putnam City North's last two seasons have begun with the frustration of losses to their top rival, Putnam City.
So Friday night's 42-27 win over the Pirates was a big lift to a PC North team out to prove itself this season.
Coach Bob Wilson was pleased with how his team played after it got the lead.
“When they would come back, we would come right back at them,” he said. “The defense played well. We had a couple of fumbles and they held up well. We had a big goal-line stand at the end.”
Senior quarterback John Robert Simon gave the offense a good balance, throwing the ball consistently and showing his running ability as well. In addition, running back Tae Moore had 130 yards, and Nathaniel Ocran added a couple of touchdown runs.
“Offensive coordinator Scott Burger did a nice job of mixing up the pass and run,” Wilson said. “It was good to be able to score that many points. I don't know if we've done that in a while.”
The Panthers visit Mustang next week.
FREEMAN CONFIDENT IN QUICK RETURN
Midwest City offensive lineman Carlos Freeman, one of the top players in the state, missed most of the second half of the Bombers' 50-42 loss to Edmond Santa Fe on Thursday night.
Freeman injured his knee but wanted to return late in the game. Midwest City decided to be cautious.
He's expected to miss part of the week's practices but should be back in time for their game against Stillwater this week.
