High school notebook: Lawton's Ivan Thomas commits to Texas Tech

The Red Raiders landed their third Oklahoma prospect Thursday night when Lawton defensive tackle Ivan Thomas announced his verbal commitment on Twitter.

Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Baylor and others extended offers before Trier's sophomore season, when the 6-foot-3 shooting guard averaged nearly 30 points per game.

But in the last week, five more programs have jumped in, with Texas A&M, Marquette, Temple, SMU and Washington offering scholarships.

BEARD, SCHNIDER EARN WRESTLING AWARDS

The National Wrestling Coaches Association recently selected Tuttle's Zach Beard, a four-time state champion, as the state's Wrestler of the Year.

Beard was dominant against in-state competition the last two years, capping his career with a state title at 170 pounds.

The organization also recognized Edmond North coach Andy Schnider as its Coach of the Year after leading the Huskies to the Class 6A state championship.

Tuttle's Chris Finn was named the state's Assistant Coach of the Year by the NWCA.

FARROW, WARD TAKE GATORADE HONORS

Broken Arrow thrower Bo Farrow and Beggs distance runner Regan Ward were named the Gatorade Oklahoma Track Athletes of the Year this week.

Farrow, a 6-foot-2, 245-pound senior, won the shot put and discus at the Class 6A state meet last month. He won the shot put with a throw of 61 feet, 11 inches and threw the discus 185-7 while helping the Tigers to the team championship as a team.

Farrow performed even better at the Meet of Champions, throwing the shot 62-3 and the discus 194-11.

Ward won three individual state titles in May to help Beggs claim the Class 3A team title. Ward won the 800 meters with a time of 2:19.55, the 1600 in 5:12.79 and the 3200 in 11:13.03.

Ward graduates as the state record holder in the 3,200 meters at 10:38.38.

GIRLS JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP COMING UP

The entry deadline for the Women's Oklahoma Golf Association's Girls Junior State Championship is nearing.

The event is set for July 9-10 at MeadowBrook Country Club in Tulsa. The entry deadline is July 5. Cost to enter is $60, which includes Junior WOGA membership dues.
