High school notebook: McGuinness defense prepping for Guthrie
Irish remain in contention for District 5A-2 championship. But they will have to earn it by playing No. 1-ranked Guthrie on Friday and No. 4 Deer Creek on Nov. 2.
With shutouts in four of its last five games, Class 5A's No. 3-ranked Bishop McGuinness will be asking for yet another strong performance from its defense with Friday night's visit from Guthrie.

For the Irish, the defensive mindset starts with linebacker Nick Jeffreys, a 6-foot-3, 225-pound senior who leads the team with 100 tackles. He's one of eight Irish players with at least 50 tackles this year.
Jeffreys is coming off a 15-tackle game in which he had four sacks and an interception. He also had a rushing touchdown, a receiving touchdown and 100 total yards from his H-back position.

The Knights are 4-4 overall and 2-3 in district. But Northwest will need to win its next two games, Friday vs. Deer Creek and Nov. 2 against Guthrie, and receive help elsewhere to qualify for the Class 5A playoffs.
