High school notebook: McGuinness' Jacob Lewis likely to return for game against Weatherford
McGuinness quarterback Jacob Lewis got a scare early in Friday night's game, but it was determined he had suffered a bone contusion.
McGuinness quarterback Jacob Lewis got a scare early in Friday night's game against Tulsa Kelley, which some on the Irish feared might be a broken leg.
But after the injury was examined Saturday morning, it was determined Lewis had suffered a bone contusion and is likely to return for this week's game against at Weatherford.
“He's fine,” Irish coach Justin Jones said. “We held him out preliminarily last night to make sure he was all right but he should be good to go next week.”
McGuinness backup Will Harjo threw for 223 yards and three touchdowns in relief in a 34-10 win.
“He did a great job of staying composed,” Jones said. “To come in and see the kind of blitzing that Kelley does and to be able to handle that is remarkable.”
COYLE LOOKING BEYOND ‘HUGE' WIN
Coyle coach Shane Weathers isn't downplaying the team's 22-16 win over Woodland on Friday night, but he's turning the focus to the future.
“It's a huge win,” Weathers said. “Our first district game, on the road. There was a lot going against us. But we played really well.”
Quarterback Ryan Weathers rushed for 136 yards to key the victory against a Woodland program that has been a perennial power in the 11-man ranks in recent years, going 29-1 the last two seasons. This is their first season in 8-man football.
Coyle (1-1) is already preparing for its Week 3 opponent.
“We've already distributed tape on Rejoice Christian,” Shane Weathers said. “This was just one win. It's a huge win, but we've got a long ways to go.”
CHA PULLS OFF THRILLER
In John Merrell's 30 years as head coach at Christian Heritage, he can't remember a time when the Crusaders had a come-from-behind win by scoring two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Christian Heritage defeated Mount St. Mary, 20-14, in overtime Friday night, stalling the Rockets' powerful option offense which rushed for 348 yards and scored 54 points the previous week against Crooked Oak.
In practice last week, Merrell had his defense go against an offensive unit not using a football so his defenders would focus on their assignments and not on who was carrying the football.
“You got to be assignment sound against the option,” Merrell said. “You got to tackle the fullback, the quarterback and the pitch man. You got to be very disciplined in doing that. I think it helped us. We really did a good job defensively.”
After turning the ball over five times (three interceptions and two fumbles), the Crusaders' offense came alive in the fourth quarter, scoring first with seven minutes remaining in the game, then tying the contest and forcing overtime with a touchdown with just one minute left.
