High school notebook: Putnam City Invitational adds girls tournament

by Scott Wright Published: January 1, 2014

One of the biggest boys basketball tournaments in the Oklahoma City area is expanding to include a girls event this year.

The long-running Putnam City Invitational will include a girls bracket at a second site in the Putnam City school district.

The boys PCI will be played at Putnam City West on Jan. 9-11. The girls PCI will be held the same dates at Putnam City High.

Both events are filled with some of the top teams in the state. In addition to the Putnam City schools, the boys tournament will have No. 1 Tulsa Union, No. 2 Midwest City, and the defending national homeschool champion OKC Storm. The girls event will be equally stout, including defending Class 2A champion Northeast.

If you watched the Class 2A state championship game, you likely came away impressed with Davis senior Braden Ruth. Now, some Division I colleges are starting to pick up on him, too.

The 6-foot, 245-pound fullback/linebacker has recently gained interest from programs like Tulsa, North Texas, Memphis and UTEP as a fullback prospect.
