After losing the opener of the Best of the West Tournament in Peoria, Ariz., earlier this week, Southmoore recovered in a big way with three straight shutouts to reach the finals of the tournament.

The SaberCats (5-3) fell short to Sunrise Mounton, 4-2, in the championship game, but coach Craig Troxell was pleased with his team’s showing.

Juniors Connor Gaughan, Blaze Schein and Austin Davis each threw shutouts against Arizona teams that either competed in or won the state tournament last season.

Southmoore beat Desert Mountain, Sunnyslope and Notre Dame Prep in that span.

The SaberCats next play Monday at Choctaw.
