Quarterback David Cornwell, who transferred to Norman North, isn't the only standout Jones must replace this fall.
The Longhorns also must find a replacement for All-State running back Taylor Bilyeu.
Heading into fall practice, senior Colton Story appears to be the top candidate to take over as the Longhorns primary running back.
Story made the most of his 16 rushing attempts last season, averaging nearly 11 yards per carry.
“He (Story) actually had some games last year with pretty good yards on just a few carries,” said coach Dave Martin. “He's going to be a kid that we look at to take a lot of the reps back there.”
Sophomore Cody Yelton will get an opportunity to compete with Story for carries, giving Jones solid depth at the position.
“Along with Colton, we'll look at Cody Yelton,” Martin said. “He's just a sophomore so he has a lot of upside running the football for us.
“We feel like we've got some pretty good depth back there. Colton and Cody are a little bit different type of back than Taylor was, but both have some really good speed and capabilities.”
REVIVED ATTITUDE IN NEWCASTLE
If anything excited Newcastle lineman Matthew Meyer about the first day of football practice on Monday, it was the attitude of the players around him — something that hasn't always been a positive attribute for the Racers.
“Last year, our attitude was bad,” Meyer said. “But we've put the work in that's necessary to be great and go far this season. Our coaches have really helped us out with that. If we can keep this attitude, we have a chance of going far.”
With linemen Meyer and Sheldon Dillman among the returning starters on both sides of the ball, and junior quarterback Casey Freeman back as well, the Racers feel they can make some noise in District 3A-3.
“The last couple years, there have been the kids who were excited and the kids who weren't,” Dillman said. “But this year, it feels like we've all come together and bought into the system.”
