High school notebook: State tournament brackets released

While all of the Class A participants had been decided after Sunday, Class B still had one game left to play.

The weather also forced postponements at Monday regionals scheduled for Lindsay (3A), Perkins-Tryon (3A), Chisholm (2A) and Weatherford (4A).

The Weatherford regional was postponed until at least Wednesday, which also forced the area tournament, scheduled to begin Thursday in Yukon, to be pushed back to a Friday, Saturday and Monday schedule.

CLASS B BOYS GAME POSTPONED AGAIN

The Deer Creek-Lamont girls basketball team beat Burlington and the weather to earn a Class B state tournament berth Monday in Enid. Unfortunately, the last boys tournament spot will have to wait to be filled.

The Burlington and Mulhall-Orlando boys were scheduled to play the Class B area consolation finals in Enid Monday as well, but Mulhall-Orlando administrators decided the team should not travel in the snowy conditions.

The game is now scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Enid's Chisholm Trail Expo Center, but the unfavorable weather conditions could push it back to Wednesday.

DOUGLASS WINS REGIONAL TITLE

Stephen Clark scored 40 points and second-ranked Douglass rolled to a 109-72 victory over John Marshall at Heritage Hall Monday afternoon in a Class 4A regional final.

The game was pushed back because of snow last week. Douglass will face Tulsa McLain in the area championship Saturday at Yukon, with the winner advancing to the state tournament.

RALPH NIGRO STEPS DOWN AT YUKON

After five seasons, Ralph Nigro has resigned as Yukon's boys basketball coach. He informed the team of his decision Monday afternoon.

“Ralph was really dedicated, just a tireless worker who put his heart and soul into trying to improve our program the last five years,” Yukon athletic director David Fisher said. “It wasn't an easy task when you're playing in the toughest conference in the state. But he did everything with high energy and integrity.”

The Millers were 2-18 this season, their worst record in Nigro's five years. The season ended last Friday with a playoff loss at third-ranked Putnam City.

Fisher said the search process for Yukon's next coach will begin after the state tournament, which concludes March 9.
