High school soccer: Late goal lifts Norman North girls to win over McGuinness

Just moments after Norman North missed a scoring opportunity when a penalty kick hit the crossbar, Bri Kuestersteffen scored the game-winner in a 1-0 Timberwolves victory over Bishop McGuinness in the Class 6A soccer quarterfinals Friday night at Norman North.

In a match that looked like it might be heading for overtime, Norman North’s Bri Kuestersteffen made sure it didn’t.

Just moments after Norman North missed a scoring opportunity when a penalty kick hit the crossbar, Kuestersteffen scored the game-winner in a 1-0 Timberwolves victory over Bishop McGuinness in the Class 6A soccer quarterfinals Friday night at Norman North.

The goal came with about six minutes to play, sending second-ranked Norman North to Tuesday’s semifinal against No. 3 Broken Arrow.

EDMOND MEMORIAL DOWNS NORTH

Fifth-ranked Edmond Memorial needed overtime to win its second consecutive Edlam playoff battle of the week.

After topping Santa Fe in the first round, Memorial defeated Edmond North in Friday’s quarterfinals, 3-2 in overtime.

Memorial will face No. 1 and undefeated Tulsa Union in Tuesday’s semifinals.

NORMAN NORTH WINS CROSSTOWN CLASH

The playoff version of the Crosstown Clash between Norman and Norman North went to the No. 2 Timberwolves, who got a hat trick from Carson Cacciatore in the 4-2 win.

Norman North took a 3-1 lead on fifth-ranked Norman just before half and was able to keep its distance, with Cacciatore scoring late in the match to cap his three-goal night.

HERITAGE HALL WINS 15TH STRAIGHT

With two goals each from Matthew and Garrett McLaughlin, second-ranked Heritage Hall stayed perfect on the season with a 5-1 win over Deer Creek in the Class 5A quarterfinals.

Matthew McLaghlin added a pair of assists. Heritage Hall held a 2-1 lead at the half, but put the game away with three second-half goals.

The Chargers will face No. 1 Tulsa East Central in next Tuesday’s semifinals.

QUICK KICKS

Santa Fe South ended an impressive season by Mount St. Mary with a 4-0 win in the Class 4A quarterfinals... Northwest Classen (5A) and Southeast (4A) both advanced to the semifinals with one-goal wins Friday.
