High school soccer: Mustang off to better start this season

Jared Homer's return to Mustang as the boys' soccer coach last season didn't go as he had envisioned.
The former All-State soccer player at Mustang and kicker for the Broncos' football team did not expect a 1-12 season from a program that usually makes the playoffs each year.

“Miserable doesn't do it justice,” Homer said of last year's season. “It was a grind. We tried different tactics.
“Our issue last year was scoring goals. We did fine stopping teams. We couldn't find a way to put the ball in the back of the net.”
Mustang, which started four freshmen and three sophomores a year ago, scored just eight goals last season and four came in the Broncos' lone win over Lawton.
But things have flipped for Homer and the Broncos to start the 2013 season. Mustang is 3-0 and already has scored more goals (10) than last year's season total.
Mustang owns victories over Yukon and Putnam City North, coming from behind in both games. Against Putnam City North, Mustang trailed 3-1 but scored four goals in the final 20 minutes.
“We've really played better than expected,” Homer said. “We have played two really good teams in Yukon and Putnam City North and found a way to win both of them.”
In their last game before the spring break on Tuesday, the Broncos remained unbeaten with a 2-0 victory over Carl Albert.
