High school soccer: Mustang off to better start this season

Jared Homer's return to Mustang as the boys' soccer coach last season didn't go as he had envisioned. But things have flipped for Homer and the Broncos to start the 2013 season.

The Broncos have been led in scoring by senior Nathan Whitey and junior Colton Haskin, who each have four goals and two assists already this season. Homer calls Haskin the Broncos' most dynamic player.

“He can make things happen,” Homer said. “We try to go through him with everything. He has taken on the role this year as our playmaker.”

Mustang took its lumps last season by playing so many freshmen and sophomores, but it seems to be paying off for the Broncos this season.

“We kind of threw guys in the fire and had to have them grow up a little bit, and they have,” Homer said.

Mustang is eyeing a return to the playoffs but plays in a tough district that includes defending state and national champion Norman North, perennial power Edmond Memorial, U.S. Grant, Putnam City, Westmoore and Lawton.

Mustang returns to action after spring break when it hosts the Bronco Cup. The eight-team field includes Edmond North, Putnam City North, Norman, Bixby, Bartlesville, Westmoore and Guymon.
