High school softball notebook: Little Axe building for a playoff run

Little Axe coach Gerre Griffin feels comfortable when his team scores four runs.

“We've figured out ourselves if we can score four runs, we can beat a lot of people,” he said. “A lot of times we haven't been able to score enough runs and that's been a problem for us.”

The Indians are 9-18 and have 13 freshmen on their 25-player roster.

But Griffin doesn't see this as a rebuilding year for his team, which has won three straight state championships.

“That's what everybody says, but when you play at a program that's got a good history like this school's got, you expect to win every game,” he said.

In fact, he expects the Indians to make a deep run in the playoffs, which begin with districts against Crooked Oak.

“I can promise you, we're dangerous,” Griffin said. “We can beat people. I'm expecting us to go back to state. The girls are expecting to go back to state, too.”


Carl Albert senior first baseman Krista Waggoner continued her impressive season last week, going 10 for 15 at the plate with three triples, four RBIs and four runs to lead the Titans to the championship of their own tournament.

“She's been unconscious lately,” Carl Albert coach Colin White said. “Just a bunch of triples; just not making outs at all.”
