High school track: Anthonio Humphrey always strives to be better

The Douglass junior competes against himself, trying to be better than he was the day before.

“I've always got something else I'm striving for,” he said. “I think I can run a 1:55, maybe 1:54. I feel like I'm right where I want to be going into state.”

College programs are already taking notice of Humphrey, and he could have a future on the track.

“He's probably our best runner, but he has a tremendous desire to win,” Douglass coach Larry Joubert said. “He' takes pride in his performance and his work ethic. He has a tremendous ability to overcome pressure, and an amazing work ethic.

“He's already a great student, so if he keeps doing all the other things right, I think he'll definitely have the opportunity to compete at the collegiate level.”
