With Moore Stadium unavailable, Oklahoma Track Coaches Association President Dennis Seifried of Weatherford decided to move the annual Meet of Champions to Yukon High School.
The event will be held Tuesday night, and Seifried is expecting the biggest field in the four years since the event was brought back.
“We already have 250 kids registered from the small schools entered,” Seifried said. “We had 315 kids in last year's event, so the turnout might be the best we've ever had.”
Athletes who finished first or second in an event at the Class 5A/6A track meet over the weekend automatically qualify for the event and can register at http://ohstrack.com. The next four best times, regardless of class, will be eligible for the meet in hopes of having 16 competitors in each event.
Going forward, Seifried says the coaches association hopes to grow the event to become an Oklahoma-Texas meet, with champions from the two states going head-to-head.
“That's in the works,” Seifried said. “Right now, we're just trying to get all of our top kids involved. Eventually, we'd like to make it an Oklahoma-Texas event.”
