EDMOND — Playing 36 holes, walking the hilly terrain of Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman will suck the strength out of your legs.
Playing a soccer match will do the same thing.
How about both in one day?
Edmond Memorial senior Jacob Bishop pulled it off on Monday, and he hopes he won’t have to do it again.
“There aren’t any more conflicts on the schedule,” Bishop said. “This game got moved up one day, to the day of the tournament. But I got to the game on time.
“There was a little bit of fatigue factor, but it was an Edlam game against Santa Fe, so I was riding on adrenaline. It’s a lot of fun. I love both sports.”
Bishop gave up soccer when he got to high school, focusing on golf, which turned out to be a good decision. He had a strong junior year, and followed it up with a summer season that was one of the best in the state.
His play produced a scholarship offer from Wichita State, and he signed last fall. Now, he’s one of the top players in Class 6A.
But Bishop saw a need on the soccer team. He talked to golf coach Scott MacDonald, who is close friends with soccer coach Jeff Lovett. And everyone found a method that would work for Bishop to play both sports.
