Edmond North and two other schools had to forfeit fast-pitch softball games Wednesday as Class 6A regional play began.

The Huskies were scheduled to play U.S. Grant at noon, but after a scheduling problem was brought to the Edmond administration's attention Wednesday morning, the start of the game was delayed.

Eventually, Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association officials and Edmond administrators agreed on punishment that would keep the team in the playoffs.

Edmond North forfeited the game to U.S. Grant, and softball coach Rick Nordyke will not coach the team for the remainder of the season and for the first five games of next season.

Claremore and Stillwater were also affected by similar rulings, with Stillwater being bumped out of regional play as a result.

Edmond North's problem stemmed from a tournament in Aurora, Colo., where the Huskies played a day of pool play instead of two games.

“That put us as playing 23 regular-season games instead of 22,” Edmond athletic director Mike Nunley said. “We were obviously concerned and worked with the OSSAA on the sanctions. We have total respect for the rules, and Edmond prides itself on being the example and not the excuse.”
