DEL CITY GIRLS STRUGGLING TO START FAST
Del City's girls' basketball team, which is ranked No. 5 in Class 5A, lost two straight games to end the Carl Albert Titan Classic last weekend, and in both losses — to Carl Albert and Mustang — the Eagles had to recover from huge, early deficits.
Against Carl Albert in the tournament semifinals, Del City trailed 16-3 after the first quarter but came back to lose by just four points.
Against Mustang, the Eagles were down 19-4 after the first quarter before rallying to make the game tight in the fourth quarter.
“We can set up any offense we want, but until they decide to execute and come out and hit shots, we're not gonna win,” said Del City coach Karri Sears.
“We always want to ease into something, and we can't do that. You've got to play a full four quarters. You've gotta come out and execute, and we don't.”
One reason for the early-game struggles is a lack of experience. The Eagles returned three starters from a year ago, but lost starting point guard Dionna Collins, a junior, to a torn ACL five games into the season. Collins had surgery on her knee earlier this month and is expected to make a full recovery for her senior season.
The only other two players with any experience to speak of are seniors Toni Smith, a Fresno State signee, and Mariah Jackson.
Del City (11-5) returns to the court Friday at Moore.

COLLEGE POSTCARD: WOMACK FITTING IN AT UMES
Former Edmond North basketball standout Gregory Womack is finding his niche with the program at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, an NCAA Division I program in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
Womack, a 6-foot-5 sophomore who transferred to UMES from Redlands Community College in El Reno, recently made four 3-pointers in a 67-55 loss to Bethune-Cookman and has been a key piece of the UMES offense this season.
UMES is coached by Frankie Brown, whose staff includes former Colorado head coach Ricardo Patton.
