What’s on tap
Here are some high school events to watch in the Oklahoma City metro area this week:
Northwest Classen at Piedmont
When: 5:30 p.m. Tuesday
Where: Piedmont High School
The story: Two crucial district battles, starting with the girls match, where Piedmont (7-2 overall, 4-0 district) hopes to stay in command of District 5A-2 with a tough schedule remaining. In the nightcap, the fourth-ranked Northwest Classen boys are looking for their sixth straight win, but Piedmont could move into the district lead with an upset.
Deer Creek/Yukon Classic
Where: Deer Creek and Yukon High School
The story: A loaded tournament that features Red Oak, Norman North, Edmond North, Guthrie, Southmoore, Westmoore and the host teams, there aren’t many games that will disappoint. Red Oak, the smallest school in the tournament and perhaps most intriguing in the field, is one of the state’s top baseball programs and the Class B champion that past three years. The Eagles are currently No. 1 in the rankings with a 20-1 record.
Edmond North Randy Hart Invitational
When: 8 a.m. Thursday
Where: Lincoln Park West course
The story: A deep field as always, the 36-hole event will be a good primer for what the postseason could hold in Class 6A. Host Edmond North has been on fire this season, and the individual competition will be stout as well. In addition to the great class of local golfers, it will include a visit from Hobart standout and Oklahoma commit Brad Dalke.
Metro Conference Tournament
When: 8 a.m. Saturday
Where: OKC Tennis Center
The story: The four-time defending Class 6A champion Edmond North boys headline the field, though talented players from Edmond Santa Fe, Putnam City North and other programs will be on hand. The Edmond North girls, winners of three of the last five state tournaments, also have been playing well of late.
When: 10 a.m. Friday
Where: Yukon High School
The story: Having quickly grown into one of the bigger metro-area meets of the year since Yukon opened its new facility, the event provides competitors the chance to check out the track where the Class 5A and 6A state meets will be held. And it draws many of the best teams from the west side of the state as well.
When: Friday and Saturday
Where: The Ball Fields at Firelake, Shawnee
The story: A two-day event featuring a plethora of teams from all classes. It’s also a preview of what the state tournaments will be like at the complex.
