High schools: We came, we saw — and here are some of the bests from the 2012 football season

Best Game

Ryan Aber: Guthrie 42, Deer Creek 35 OT

This game had anything you could want from a high-school football game, two good teams, a great venue and a great finish (with some controversy).

Guthrie QB Bryan Dutton led the Bluejays on a game-tying drive that ended with just two seconds remaining in regulation after catching a break just moments before. Guthrie then scored again on the first play of overtime and Guthrie.

Scott Wright: OCS 44, Davis 41, Dec. 8

Talk about saving the best for last. The final game I covered this season tops the list — OCS' win in the Class 2A championship shoot-out. A week earlier, Davis had shut out Vian, the second-highest scoring offense in state history, and OCS posted 544 yards and 44 points to knock off the favored Wolves and win its first state title in its sixth try in a game that was back-and-forth like none I saw all year.

Jacob Unruh: Cashion 36, Crescent 29, Oct. 18

Cashion's win added another storybook finish to the rivalry. Cashion quarterback Ty Reasnor somehow found receiver Nate Lee in the back corner of the end zone for a 31-yard TD with 6 seconds remaining. It capped a comeback just after Crescent took a 29-28 lead with just more than one minute remaining while completing its own comeback attempt.

Best Peformance

Ryan Aber: Norman North QB Peyton Gavras in Timberwolves' 49-42 win over Owasso on Nov. 23

I say plenty of scintillating performances this season, from Gavras and Edmond Santa Fe QB Justice Hansen and Tulsa East Central's Stanvon Taylor and Carl Albert's Steven Thompson among others. But Gavras' was the biggest. Gavras threw for 395 yards and five touchdowns to lift Norman North into the Class 6A title game.
