Hispanic task force fears for survival
A state task force looking at the status of Hispanic students in higher education may expire next year because some in the first-ever Republican-controlled Legislature frown on a group that has "lightning-rod-type words” such as Hispanic or multicultural, the task force chairman said Friday.
"In some groups, the word ‘multicultural’ conjures up a negative connotation,” said Rep. Shane Jett, R-Tecumseh. A Democrat-run Legislature in 2004 created the Advancement of Hispanic Students in Higher Education Task Force. Its focus was to study, report and make recommendations on recruitment, retention and completion of studies of Hispanic college and university students. Members Friday talked about changing the name to make reauthorization easier for the task force, which is scheduled to expire July 1. Jett suggested having ‘international students’ in the name, but Armando Pena of the State Regents for Higher Education and a task force member, said the panel should continue to focus on underserved students. Many international students speak English and have adequate finances for higher education, he said.
