Historic buildings coming down in Broken Arrow
BROKEN ARROW -- Some Broken Arrow history is now but a memory.
And soon, another link to the city's contributions to the state and the nation will be broken.
The Broken Arrow Ledger reports that a small building that once stood as part of the Civilian Conservations Corps's large camp has been demolished.
The newspaper reported that more than 230 men served the CCC there in the organization which began early in Franklin Roosevelt's presidency.
From that time in the 1930s until the camp was closed around 1944, those who were enrolled at the camp worked on conservation efforts and other projects.
The newspaper said there originally were 15 frame buildings constructed there. Now, those are gone.
There is another building nearby that has ties to the bygone days.
It is a frame building moved from Camp Gruber, east of Muskogee, to Broken Arrow in 1944.
It was among the buildings used by Broken Arrow High School.
Later, it was used by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars as a meeting place.
Learn more about the history of these buildings and the city's past.
