MESILLA, N.M. (AP) — A Roman Catholic church that's a popular stop for tourists in southern New Mexico is closed for renovations.

The Basilica of San Albino's in Mesilla closed Wednesday for a five-week project aimed at making the church more energy efficient and comfortable while maintaining most of its traditional features.

According to the Las Cruces Sun-News (http://bit.ly/1fZbeAn ), the basilica was dedicated in 1908 but a church has stood on Mesilla Plaza since the 1850s.

Masses will be held across the street in the parish hall until the work is complete. That's expected to be in mid-June.
