Hobart endures outages together

HOBART — Mayor Tom Talley rejoiced Wednesday at Hobart’s continued restoration of electricity, but tempered his enthusiasm at the sight of raindrops.

Talley sat in his lighted and heated law office for the second straight day — a privilege he hadn’t enjoyed since Hobart’s electricity flickered off around noon Jan. 28.

Since then this Kiowa County seat has had sporadic power, leaving most families in the town of 3,000 residents without heat for several days.

Electrical crews continued to restore power to pockets of Hobart residents on Wednesday. With no heat in their homes, many had sought shelter at United Methodist Church, The Searchlight Center adult day care and the town’s lone nursing home, Hobart Living Center.

"We did a welfare check door-to-door Sunday,” Talley said.
